DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes for his first Southern Oregon appearance\, guitarist Derek Gripper. Derek will be on a solo tour of the west coast all the way from South Africa. This will be a very special evening of music you won’t want to miss. \nDerek Gripper is one of South Africa’s leading guitarists whose love of the kora set him transcribing and recording some of its greatest works\, changing the face of classical guitar… \nWhen Gripper released “One Night on Earth\,” his first album of kora translations\, classical guitar legend John Williams said he thought it was “absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it\,” while kora maestro Toumani Diabaté asked for confirmation that it was indeed just one person playing. Both invited Derek to collaborate with them: Derek performed with Williams in London’s Shakespeare’s Globe and King’s Place\, and with Diabaté and his Symmetric Orchestra at the Acoustik Festival Bamako\, Mali. Nominated for a Grammy\, he has toured with many world-renowned artists\, including Paquito D’Rivera\, Bud Shank\, Dori Caymmi\, and many others. He was musical director for Flora Purim and Airto Moreira for 23 years. Marcos has written arrangements for Dizzy Gillespie’s band and replaced Gil Evans as arranger-composer of Airto’s Spiritual Mass in Germany. He is sought after as a producer of CDs\, including two of his own. Marcos heads the Brazilian Music Department at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley. DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project kicks off its 2025 concert season with the Affinity Trio from Milwaukee Wisconsin. This will be the group’s first time in Ashland and will fit right in at the Old Siskiyou Barn. Seating at the OSB is very limited so reserve early as it will sell out fast. \nThe Affinity Trio consists of Eric Jacobson on trumpet\, Clay Schaub on bass\, and Pamela York on piano. Individually\, they have worked with some of the biggest names in the jazz world: Benny Golson\, Phil Woods\, Jeff Hamilton\, John Clayton\, Bruce Barth\, Brian Lynch\, Greg Tardy\, Frank Morgan\, etc. \nThe trio holds a weekly residency at Milwaukee’s Mason Street Grill inside the historic Pfister Hotel that began in 2021. Performing without a drummer\, Affinity Trio creates an intimate ambience with a strong rhythmic groove. They will be joined by Garret Baxter on bass\, Theresa McCoy on drums and Ed Dunsavage on guitar. \nJoin us for a musical journey to Brazil\, as Holly\, Dmitri\, and their all-star band put a fresh spin on jazz samba\, bossa nova\, and beyond! \nIn the early 1960s Brazil ignited a global musical revolution by exporting a new kind of jazz-infused music. Blending subtle\, caressing melodies with intoxicating syncopated rhythms\, the sound was called BOSSA NOVA (Portuguese for “new trend”). When Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “The Girl From Ipanema” (recorded by Stan Getz\, Astrud Gilberto and João Gilberto) won the Grammy in 1965\, the new trend became a worldwide phenomenon. \nKnown for her “soulfully graceful\, liquid-like voice” (Phoenix New Times)\, Los Angeles vocalist HOLLY PYLE started out as an opera major before studying jazz and psychology. Now one of the most popular vocalists in the west\, Holly performs with leading jazz groups and appears regularly as a solo a-cappella act using electronic looping to build masterful sonic creations. \nFlugelhornist DMITRI MATHENY has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music\, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following\, releasing twelve CDs and touring extensively throughout the United States\, Europe and Asia.The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.” \nFor a decade Dmitri and Holly have toured the western states\, delighting audiences with their creative collaborations. DESCRIPTION:Featuring Sylvia Cuenca and Essiet Essiet\nSiskiyou Music Project welcomes for his first southern Oregon performance\, guitarist Roni Ben-Hur with drummer Sylvia Cuenca and bassist Essiet Essiet on Sunday\, September 22 at 4 p.m. at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland. \nJazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator\, renowned for his golden tone\, improvisational brilliance\, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers\, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist\, Ben-Hur keeps the flame alive and pure\, burning in every note… He’s a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Roni – born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen\, based in the New York City area – has recorded a dozen-plus albums as leader or co-leader\, with The New York Times praising his “crisp\, fluid style” and Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” He has developed a rare facility in both straight-ahead jazz and samba/bossa-nova styles\, underscored by his work with masters in each field\, from bebop piano sage Barry Harris to beloved Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade. \nRoni’s newest album as a leader is Stories\, released by Dot Time Records in March 2021; its poetic mix of songs and instrumentals sees the guitarist drawing a line from childhood musical memories in Israel to his life today as a globally minded artist. JazzTimes\, in its glowing review of Stories\, noted the guitarist’s inspired interplay with such diverse talents as pianist George Cables and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen\, as well as vocalists from Israel and Mexico; the review went on to laud Roni and company’s brand of storytelling as “distinctive” and “uniformly engaging.” Always an educator as well as a performer\, Roni has directed the jazz program at New York’s Kaufman Music Center for more than 25 years. She has had the honor of sharing the bandstand with saxophone legend Joe Henderson for 4 years and trumpet legend Clark Terry for 17 years. The Joe Henderson quartet toured frequently in European countries Norway\, Denmark\, Sweden\, Austria\, Belgium\, England\, Switzerland\, France\, Italy and Germany and venues across the U.S. In a trio setting she performed with Joe Henderson and Charlie Haden in 1989 and with George Mraz in 1994. She performed with the Clark Terry Quintet and Big Band at Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Blue Note\, Queen Elizabeth 2\, Royal Viking\, S.S. Norway jazz cruises and clubs\, concerts and festivals in the U.S\, Europe\, the Caribbean and South America. To learn more about Sylvia visit her website here. \nEssiet Okon Essiet first received critical acclaim more than a decade ago as a member of saxophonist Bobby Watson’s post hard bop group Horizon He has long since established himself as one of New York’s premier bassist. Born in Omaha\, Nebraska\, his parents having moved there from Nigeria\, West Africa\, the family later moved to Wisconsin where Essiet began his musical studies at age 10 on the violin. Four years\, later he switched to the bass. As a child\, and into his teens\, his family moved often. His father worked for the US\, as well as the Nigerian government\, and his job took the family to many places including Europe\, Africa and various cities in the US. His family finally settled in Portland\, Oregon where he began studying jazz at the age of 14. Having traveled widely as a youngster with his family\, he had an easy time adjusting to life on the road once he turned professional. More importantly\, his early exposure to many cultures\, languages\, folkways and religions\, fostered his world view of strength through diversity. “Some musicians are purist” says Essiet\, “but I like to mix styles. As a Steinway Artist\, Randy Porter draws from a rich palette of sonorities found within his imagination and the depths of the piano. By the age of sixteen\, he began to play professionally and started teaching. After his college years spent studying music at UC Davis\, he decided to pursue his love of music as a leader\, composer\, and arranger. Brian now leads his own group on the Hammond Organ and is an in demand sideman. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 19\, 2024\n7 p.m.\nGrizzly Peak Winery\, Ashland \nSiskiyou Music Project welcomes for the first time in southern Oregon\, Duo Violão Brasil Plus One. This will be part of a residency partnership with Britt Education and the group will visit a number of schools while they’re in southern Oregon. \nDuo Violão Brasil Plus One is the result of guitarists Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber’s reverence for Brazilian guitar\, the “violão”\, and their desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of putting two “violões” together. A master of both 6 and 7 string guitars\, Rogério Souza is one of the foremost representatives of the music of Rio de Janeiro. He is an award-winning composer and arranger who has worked with a veritable who’s who of Brazilian artists. Duo Violão is joined by pandeiro player and percussionist Ami Molinelli who records with Grupo Falso Baiano\, one of the leading American choro bands. With repertoire from composers like Pixinguinha\, Baden Powell\, and Tom Jobim\, they navigate effortlessly through the many styles of 20th century Brazilian popular music while showcasing original works and inventive arrangements.\nRogério Souza is a pioneer in developing the style of music that is known today as “choro novo” – innovative interpretations of traditional Brazilian instrumental music while remaining true to the roots of the music. He performs regularly in music festivals\, concerts\, and workshops throughout Latin America\, Europe\, the United States\, and Asia. His current show focuses on the art of Brazilian guitar and includes original works as well as classic repertoire. Along with performing\, Rogério frequently gives masterclasses and workshops that focus on guitar styles and cover material from his latest books and CDs.\nEdinho Gerber possesses a rich musical vocabulary developed in the two countries where he was raised: the United States and Brazil. Navigating effortlessly between the genres of choro\, jazz\, samba\, and blues\, he is always in search of the intersection points within his dual cultural identity. A staple in the Chicago music scene for many years\, he was a highly in demand sideman having played with countless U.S. based Brazilian groups\, including Som Brasil\, Renato Anesi Trio\, A Cor do Brasil\, and led the samba-jazz group Zona Sul. He has performed in prestigious festivals and concerts in throughout the United States\, Russia\, and Japan\, and currently resides in Rio de Janeiro where he performs regularly with Duo Violão Brasil and recently released “Benjamim e Edinho” an inventive cross-cultural collaboration with Ben Lamar Gay. \nAmi Molinelli is a professional percussionist and educator specializing in Brazilian and Latin percussion. Ami received her Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts. Her performance and recording credits include theater\, television (NBC). She is a freelance performing artist as well. She is endorsed by Latin Percussion (LP) and Rhythm Tech. \nHere last album\, “História do Choro” with Duo Violão Brasl + 1 was released in 2019 and was celebrated as one of the best jazz albums from the Bay Area for 2019. (Andy Gilbert\, San Jose Mercury News) She is a two-time San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Recipient 2018 and 2020. \nShe co-leads the Brazilian and Jazz ensemble\, Grupo Falso Baiano with three albums to their credit: “Depois” released in 2017\, “Simplicidade – Live at Yoshi’s” and “Viajando em Choro e Jazz.” Grupo Falso Baiano have been featured on NPR’s the California Report\, Radio Latina and Pandora LIVE! \nThis performance is made possible by a grant from Jazz Road. He began his classical piano studies at the age of seven and was introduced to jazz piano at the age of 14.\nHe has had the pleasure of performing and recording with many amazing artists\, including Arturo Sandoval\, Jane Monheit\, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy\, Brian Lynch\, Mike Stern\, Denise Donatelli. This partnership has now blossomed into duo and quartet shows that have been performed nationwide at Blue Note Hawaii\, Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix\, Yoshi’s Oakland\, SF Jazz\, Jazz TX\, LIBRETTO\, Jazz Alley\, and the Purple Room Palm Springs. Haymer played and arranged for Monheit’s most recent album\, The Merriest. \nBassist Luca Alemanno. Currently based in Los Angeles (originally from Lecce\, Italy)\, upright/electric bassist Luca Alemanno is considered by critics “among the finest young modern jazz musicians that currently Italy has to offer.” Touring\, recording and performing at festivals and clubs in Europe\, Asia and North and South America\, Luca has appeared with international jazz artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Miguel Zenón\, Mark Turner\, Walter Smith III\, Greg Osby\, Bob Mintzer\, Joe Lovano\, Logan Richardson\, Esperanza Spalding\, Gerald Clayton\, Stanley Jordan\, Kenwood Dennard\, Maria Schneider\, Jerry Bergonzi\, Mark Giuliana\, Dave Koz\, Jason Lindner\, Enrico Pieranunzi\, Fabrizio Bosso\, Flavio Boltro\, Rosario Giuliani\, Anne Ducros\, Kim Plainfield\, Magnus Lindgren\, Nicola Conte\, and many others. Martucci Conservatory of Music (Salerno). \nDrummer Rick Montalbano has had a long and varied career that spans over three quarters of his forty years. Growing up in Central New York\, he was surrounded by deep musical influences both in and outside the home\, centering on jazz and beginning with the work of his father\, renowned pianist\, organist\, and arranger Rick Montalbano Sr.\nHoning his skills on the late-night bandstands of new York clubs like Augie’s (now Smoke) and the legendary Small’s led to sideman work with New York’s most acclaimed jazz musicians\, including Brad Mehldau\, Chris Potter\, Randy Brecker\, Clark Terry\, Phil Woods\, Joel Frahm\, Sam Yahel\, Joe Magnarelli\, Eric Alexander\, Kurt Rosenwinkle\, and many more. It was during this period of Montalbano’s rise that he formed a relationship (both personal and professional) with vocalist Jane Monheit. This collaboration has proved to be the most prolific of his career\, resulting in eight studio albums\, two DVDs\, nearly twenty years of nonstop international touring\, and countless film and tv appearances. These include the soundtracks of feature films “Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow” and “Never Let Me Go”\, performances on Letterman\, Conan O’Brien\, Good Morning America\, and Access Hollywood\, and many additional talk shows and news programs both domestic and international. If you’d like to be on our wait list feel free to send us an email. \nSiskiyou Music Project welcomes back from Seattle\, Washington\, Gypsy Jazz favorites Pearl Django for a performance on Friday\, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland. This performance is made possible by a collaboration with Britt Education. The group will be in residency all week bringing music into the local schools. \nPearl Django began as a trio in Tacoma\, Washington in 1994. The focus of Pearl Django was\, and is\, to incorporate the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with American swing music. They quickly expanded to a quintet\, adding a violinist and a third guitarist. An interview on NPR’s All Things Considered in 2001 brought the group to national attention. In June 2002\, Pearl Django performed at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine\, just outside of Paris\, France. As of 2007 Pearl Django is working as both a quartet and a quintet (with accordionist\, David Lange) All of the members are contributing original compositions to the band’s expansive repertoire. They have released 15 CDs to date.“If Paris is the city of love\, then Pearl Django’s music is the flirtatious accompaniment.” \nAlong the West coast\, Pearl Django has performed from Los Angeles to Fairbanks. DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes for his first southern Oregon appearance\, 7-string guitarist Ron Jackson featuring drummer Sylivia Cuenca and bassist Essiet Essiet. This performance will take place on Sunday\, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland. \nVersatile and sophisticated jazz guitarist Ron Jackson has performed\, recorded and taught music in over 30 countries. With a varied career as a performer\, composer and arranger\, Highlights include shows and tours with artists such as Taj Mahal\, Jimmy McGriff\, Larry Coryell\, Benny Golson\, Oliver Lake\, Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller. Ron has been featured as a leader in jazz festivals all over the world\, including the North Sea Jazz Festival\, Edinburgh Jazz Festivals and Winter Jazzfest\, NYC. \nBorn in the Philippines\, lived in many states as a kid\, then settled in Harvard\, Massachusetts\, west of Boston\, Ron was initially influenced by rock guitar greats like Jimmy Page\, before falling under the spell of jazz and following the style and career of jazz guitar luminaries like Pat Metheny and George Benson. After attending Berklee School of Music on scholarship\, studying jazz composition and arranging\, Ron spent two formative years in the mid-1980’s living and playing guitar with the lively expat jazz community in Paris\, France. Ron moved to New York City where he remains an active participant in Gotham’s always vibrant jazz scene. A master of the six\, seven and twelve string guitars\, Ron appeared on over 40 albums by such artists as Hal Singer\, Graeme Norris\, Ron Blake\, Gisele Jackson and T.K. Blue\, before founding the independent record label Roni Music in 2003 which has since released some of his eight of his albums as a leader including The Dream I Had (2003)\, Flubby Dubby (2008) and Akustik InventYours (2014). His latest project\, Jazz Standards and Other Songs (2019) is an alluring mix of familiar jazz numbers and innovative adaptations of songs from other genres like his trendsetting arrangement for jazz trio Drake’s “Passion Fruit.” \nRon was grateful to be selected as the winner of the 1996 Heritage International Jazz Guitar Competition. He has also been a recipient of the 2012 Donald Knutson Memorial Development Fund and the 1991 and 2000 Meet the Composer Performance Fund. The Joe Henderson quartet toured frequently in European countries Norway\, Denmark\, Sweden\, Austria\, Belgium\, England\, Switzerland\, France\, Italy and Germany and venues across the U.S. In a trio setting she performed with Joe Henderson and Charlie Haden in 1989 and with George Mraz in 1994. She performed with the Clark Terry Quintet and Big Band at Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Blue Note\, Queen Elizabeth 2\, Royal Viking\, S.S. Norway jazz cruises and clubs\, concerts and festivals in the U.S\, Europe\, the Caribbean and South America. Born in Omaha\, Nebraska\, his parents having moved there from Nigeria\, West Africa\, the family later moved to Wisconsin where Essiet began his musical studies at age 10 on the violin. Four years\, later he switched to the bass. As a child\, and into his teens\, his family moved often. His father worked for the US\, as well as the Nigerian government\, and his job took the family to many places including Europe\, Africa and various cities in the US. His family finally settled in Portland\, Oregon where he began studying jazz at the age of 14. Having traveled widely as a youngster with his family\, he had an easy time adjusting to life on the road once he turned professional. Raised in Alaska\, this Oregon-based artist brings a fresh and original perspective to time-honored musical paths\, channeling her innate understanding of connectedness across musical boundaries to forge bonds with diverse audiences in North America\, Asia\, and Europe. A lover of global cultures and music\, her repertoire is a multi-lingual one\, including songs in Spanish\, French\, Portuguese\, Italian\, Japanese and Korean as well as her native English. She will be joined by pianist Josh Nelson who some of you may remember from when he performed here with vocalist Sara Gazarek. \nThis concert will conclude our Spring season and will take place on Wednesday\, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland.\nSeating is very limited. \n\nDanish jazz vocalist Sinne Eeg (sée-neh/ée) is known throughout the world\, but it all started in a small town called Lemvig in September 1977. Sinne grew up in a jazzy home\, where her father played double bass\, her mother the clarinet and her brother the saxophone. Naturally\, Sinne started singing. She graduated in 2003 from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Esbjerg and then moved to Copenhagen to pursue her career. Her plan obviously worked. After putting in her time for years on the road\, performing at small clubs and cafes\, Sinne won her first Danish Music Award for her album “Waiting For Dawn” in 2007. Her dark vocals and modern interpretation of Nordic jazz touched audiences all over Europe and Asia. Since then\, Sinne has released several prize-winning albums\, including her solo album “Dreams” from 2018\, recorded in New York City with Scott Colley\, Joey Baron\, Larry Koonse and Jacob Christoffersen. In early 2020 Sinne released one of her biggest projects ever: “We’ve Just Begun”\, a winning collaboration with the 19-piece Danish Radio Big Band and her 9th album overall. The record was produced by André Fischer (Diane Schuur\, Nina Simone\, Natalie Cole) and mixed at the acclaimed Capitol Studios in Los Angeles by the legendary Al Schmitt (Frank Sinatra\, Miles Davis\, Ray Charles). The album has received countless international rave reviews\, hovered high for many weeks on the American JazzWeek Top 50 chart\, and continues to enjoy frequent airplay in all radio markets. Sinne has many loyal fans in the US\, Scandinavia and Asia\, especially China and Japan. She is poised for a major breakthrough in the US\, where she regularly tours. She has performed with American jazz icons including Larry Goldings\, Peter Erskine and Ken Peplowski; and at storied jazz clubs including Green Mill in Chicago and Birdland in New York. The Danish songstress is versatile\, equally comfortable fronting big orchestras in concert halls as well as smaller ensembles in intimate jazz clubs. Everywhere she sings – Tokyo\, Copenhagen\, Los Angeles or Madrid – audiences are mesmerized by her incandescent phrasing and scatting\, all with natural\, perfect pitch. Sinne Eeg is not only a brilliant vocalist; she is also a great songwriter. Her talent for writing and composing won the prestigious Danish Carl Prize 2018 for Song Of The Year\, “Aleppo”\, included on her album “Dreams”. A supremely eloquent clarinetist and a saxophonist of unusual presence and power\, Wainapel is a truly ambidextrous artist who has delved deeply into two vast and variegated traditions. Of course\, musical currents have ebbed and flowed between the two continental nations for much of the past century\, and Wainapel is fully at home at the confluence of those influences (he’s toured widely with Brazilian jazz giants Airto Moreira and Flora Purim). But most of the time he’s got his feet firmly planted in one country or the other\, even if his experience in the south shapes his work as an improviser. “The Brazilian side injects a lot of emotion into my playing\, and it opened up my concept of melody and harmony\,” Wainapel says. \n​Wainapel (pronounced wine-apple) got his start as a jazz musician\, and over the past three decades he’s performed with masters such as pianists Kenny Barron and McCoy Tyner\, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson\, drummer Billy Hart\, and fellow reed expert Joe Lovano. He made his recording debut as a leader with 1994’s At Home/On the Road (JazzMission Records)\, a critically hailed post-bop session exploring compositions by the likes of Woody Shaw\, Sam Rivers\, and Wayne Shorter. Wainapel followed up two years later with Ambrosia: The Music of Kenny Barron (A Records)\, featuring a suite of Barron’s tunes arranged by Jeff Beal for the Metropole Orchestra and a set of Barron’s Brazilian-inspired music for a sextet with Marcos Silva on keyboards. Kenny Barron himself was on hand for piano duties on Wainapel’s acclaimed 1998 straight-ahead quintet session The Hang (Spirit Nectar/JazzMission)\, which also features drummer Kenny Wollesen and the brothers Phil and Larry Grenadier on trumpet and bass\, respectively. \nWainapel’s first full recording of Brazilian music was 2004’s New Choros of Brazil (Acoustic Music Records/Proteus Entertainment)\, a gorgeous duo collaboration with legendary Brazilian guitarist Paulo Bellinati. Rather than focusing on Brazilian standards\, they assembled a program of previously unrecorded choros by masters like Sergio Assad\, Guinga\, Sergio Santos\, and Dori Caymmi. “I’m really proud of it\,” says Wainapel\, who plays clarinet exclusively on the album. “That project gave me a lot of confidence.” \n​His two most recent recordings\, Amigos Brasileiros and Amigos Brasileiros Vol. 2\, are part of Wainapel’s ongoing process documenting his passion for contemporary Brazilian music. Recorded with a superlative cast of Brazilian instrumentalists he’s befriended during his many travels around the country\, the albums include several tunes written specifically for the project. In many ways Amigos Brasileiros serves as a savvy on-the-ground survey of the contemporary Brazilian scene\, a thoughtfully curated guide to musicians; musicians in a nation bound together by sound.

Drummer Steve Smith has been touring and recording with his all-star group Vital Information since 1983 making 2023 the 40th Anniversary of the group. \nSteve Smith and Vital Information celebrate the occasion with a newly recorded double CD release entitled TIME FLIES. The newest line-up of Vital Information features virtuoso musicians with vast experience. \nKeyboardist Manuel Valera\, a Guggenheim Fellow and Grammy nominated artist\, was born\, and raised in Havana\, Cuba and is now living in NYC. Manuel plays and records with many of the New York jazz elite like Antonio Sanchez\, Dafnis Prieto and John Patitucci. \nElectric Bassist Janek Gwizdala\, originally from London\, currently living in Los Angeles\, records and tours with Peter Erskine\, Mike Stern and Randy Brecker and is one of the most in-demand bass players in the world. Both new members of Vital Information are bandleaders and recording artists with multiple recordings to their names. \nThe new trio version of Steve Smith and Vital Information collectively creates a powerhouse sound. An honors graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Berklee College of Music\, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following\, touring extensively throughout the United States\, Europe and Asia\, traveling to 19 countries. He has appeared on 120 recordings and has released twelve albums as a leader. Matheny has been active in the Pacific Northwest jazz scene since 1995\, when he first began touring the region from his home base in San Francisco. Upon relocating to Washington State in 2016\, Matheny was voted NW Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year in the Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards.

There will be an afternoon set at 2:00 p.m. and an evening performance at 7:00 p.m. \nConsidered the finest jazz vocal improviser in Canada by her peers\, her fans and by the musicians who work with her\, Jennifer Scott is an important Jazz Voice. She has sung with such Jazz Greats as: Gene Bertoncini\, Clark Terry\, Tommy Banks\, Paul Horn and Kenny Wheeler to name a few. She has been nominated for Juno and Jessie Awards with ‘Mythos’ and theatre production ‘War of the Worlds.’ \nJennifer Scott has performed to sold out crowds from San Diego to Vancouver to Whitehorse on the West Coast of Canada and has begun a major foray onto the world stage including performances in Amsterdam\, Milan and Rome. Jennifer was also featured at Stanford University performing at the Miles Davis tribute concert for their Concert series in tandem with The Jazz Museum in Harlem. More recent studio work has seen her align her vocal talents with the piano brilliance of Miles Black in the CD release Storybook. \nBassist Rene Worst has been a professional bassist since 1971. His virtuosic and supportive bass playing has been a Canadian treasure for many years on both acoustic and electric basses. He is as gifted on fretless as he is on acoustic – a rarity in the industry. Rene was educated both in Canada and the US. Rene Worst is one of the founding members of the noted fusion band “Skywalk” and has anchored and produced six recordings with them. He is also a highly regarded Producer. \nBorn in Ifar\, New Guinnea in 1954\, he moved to Canada with his family in 1960\, settling on the West Coast where he grew up and went to school. At an early age he showed an aptitude for music\, in particular jazz bass\, and it wasn’t long before he was out establishing himself as a leading jazz bassist performing with the likes of: Chet Baker\, David Bowie\, Mark Murphy\, Joe Pass\, Herb Ellis\, Freddie Hubbard\, Paul Horn\, Gene Bertoncini\, Bud Shank and many other jazz greats. \nTo read a review by noted L.A. Both performances are now sold out. There will be no intermission at either performance. Seating is very limited\, reserve early. \nIn 1962\, pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall met to record the first of two of the most influential jazz recordings. Piano and guitar duos are rare\, as their similarities can make it difficult for the musicians to stay out of each other’s way\, but Evans and Hall made their similarities their strength. Both had used space as a key element in their music\, moving away from the unrelenting intensity of bebop. \n“Undercurrent” from 1962 contained a mix of jazz standards\, including a rare up tempo version of “My Funny Valentine\,” along with the Hall original “Romain.” In his November 26\, 1962 review for Down Beat magazine jazz critic Pete Welding stated: “This collaboration between Evans and Hall has resulted in some of the most beautiful\, thoroughly ingratiating music it has been my pleasure to hear” \nFour years later Evans and Halls recorded the second and last of their duo albums.  “Intermodulation” continued the mix of standards with originals “Turn Out the Stars” from Evans and “All Across the City” from Hall. Writing for Allmusic\, music critic Michael G. Nastos wrote of the album: “A duet recording between pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall is one that should retain high expectations to match melodic and harmonic intimacies with brilliant spontaneous musicianship. Where this recording delivers that supposition is in the details and intricacy with which Evans and Hall work\, guided by simple framings of standard songs made into personal statements that include no small amounts of innovation.” \nEvans died in 1980 at age 50\, and they never had the opportunity to record again. Hall died in 2013 at age 83. \nSiskiyou Music Project will abide by current state of Oregon Covid 19 Protocols.

The group will visit a number of Rogue Valley schools during the week\, culminating with their performance on Friday\, April 22. \nNew West has developed a widespread reputation as one of the premier jazz guitar ensembles in the world. Featuring guitarists Perry Smith (NYC) John Storie (LA) and Will Brahm (LA)\, they perform exciting originals\, jazz standards and popular covers. Their signature sound comes from an innovative style that highlights rhythm\, beauty and virtuosity through combining acoustic and electric guitars. \nPraised as “sharp and refined” by the Seattle Times\, the New West Guitar Group has released 7 full length albums since 2005. Each project features their unique style of laid-back virtuosity and finely crafted arrangements. Directed by flugelhornist/composer Dmitri Matheny (“one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” —International Review of Music)\, the DMG has developed an engaging repertoire and a strong international following. The group’s signature sound pleases both crowds and critics\, balancing fresh\, original works with familiar jazz classics\, hard bop\, west coast cool and selections from the DMG’s 11 critically-acclaimed CDs. \n“Their music is a fertile landscape without boundaries\,” writes the Oakland Tribune\, “earning Matheny and his cohorts a reputation as one of the most eclectic and daring ensembles on today’s jazz scene.” All About Jazz agrees: “An all-star jazz band featuring some of the most accomplished musicians in the western United States\, the Dmitri Matheny Group is a cohesive and seamless unit\, serving up equal parts soulful expression\, caressing phrases\, imaginative asides\, and dedicated lyricism.” \nThe group will be in the Rogue Valley for a three day residency as part of a collaboration with Britt Education and Siskiyou Music Project. Please email us to be put on the cancellation list. \nSiskiyou Music Project welcomes back clarinet/saxophone master Ken Peplowski for an intimate performance at The Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland on Friday\, September 24 at 7 p.m. He will be joined by guitarist Ed Dunsavage for an evening of jazz favorites along with some Brazilian classics. \nKen Peplowski has recorded approximately 50 CDs as a soloist\, and close to 400 as a sideman\, some of the artists he’s performed/recorded with include Charlie Byrd\, Mel Torme\, Rosemary Clooney\, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops\, Hank Jones\, Peggy Lee\, Bill Charlap\, Woody Allen\, Benny Goodman\, and Madonna. He travels at least half of every year\, playing clubs\, concert halls\, colleges\, and pops concerts. He has headlined the Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall\, the Blue Note\, and Dizzy’s Club amongst many other venues. Ken’s CDs on the Capri label\, “Noir Blue\,” “In Search Of\,” and “Maybe September” were released to great critical acclaim and massive airplay. He has recorded music as diverse as Italian and French folk songs\, avant-garde jazz\, pop\, and classical music; he recorded the Darius Milhaud Clarinet Concerto with an orchestra in Sofia\, Bulgaria\, and was a featured soloist (playing Mozart) in 2015 at the Siletz Bay Music Festival in Oregon\, where he will be premiering a new concerto in 2016\, written for him by Dick Hyman. Ken was the musical director of the Oregon Festival Of American Music (OFAM) for eight years\, and is a longtime performer/consultant to The Jazz Cruise\, where he was elected into the Jazz Cruise Hall Of Fame in 2013. He resides in New York City with his dog\, and whatever children happen to be passing through.
