SUMMARY:Bohemian Trio ~ From New York
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project kicks off it’s 2019 concert season with a performance by the New York based Bohemian Trio. \nSMP and Britt Education once again collaborate to bring world class music to southern Oregon for a three-day residency which will include visits to several Rogue Valley schools and a performance at Artistic Piano Gallery on Thursday\, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. \nImmersed in different cultural and musical backgrounds\, Yosvany Terry\, Orlando Alonso\, and Yves Dharamraj joined forces in 2013 to form Bohemian Trio. The three musicians were drawn to the idea that their blend of traditions would speak to the true voice of the Americas: a cacophony of cultures that\, together\, forges a new identity that transcends Old World boundaries. \nThe piano\, cello\, and saxophone of this New York-based trio bring the diverse sounds and rhythms of Cuba and the Americas to life in an original brand of new music. With roots in Cuba\, France\, Trinidad\, and the US\, the Trio shifts intuitively among classical\, jazz\, and world music. At the heart of their collaborations are Yosvany Terry’s original works\, which are driven by Afro-Cuban rhythms\, sweeping classical melodies\, and a touch of improvisation. The Trio’s repertoire is rounded out with commissioned works by composers such as Manuel Valera\, Sonia Jacobsen\, Pedro Giraudo\, and Emilio Solla\, and favorites from the classical repertoire\, such as Passacaille from Ravel’s Piano Trio.\n\nThe members of Bohemian Trio are distinguished graduates of Cuba’s Escuela Nacional de Arte\, Juilliard\, Yale University\, and Manhattan School of Music; they have won international competitions and major awards including Grammys; they have collaborated with artists such as Chucho Valdes\, Branford Marsalis\, Joshua Bell\, and Itzhak Perlman\, and perform regularly on five continents in the world’s most renowned halls. \nBohemian Trio released its critically-acclaimed debut album\, Okónkolo\, on Innova Records in February\, 2017. Larry Blumenfeld of The Wall Street Journal writes\, “Together\, these musicians honor heritages that blur more than reinforce borders: the blend of European and African traditions that centuries ago amounted to a New World; and the sweet spot sought by many contemporary composers\, especially in New York\, grounded more in creativity than genre.” \n \n\nThis project received support from the Oregon Arts Commission; WESTAF\, the Western States Arts Federation; and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n \n\n\n\nBohemian Trio\n\n\nGeneral $25.00 USDMembers $20.00 USDStudent with I.D $10.00 USD\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UO__96RR9A&t=10s

SUMMARY:The Sound of a Dry Martini
DESCRIPTION:A Tribute to Paul Desmond & Jim Hall\nBob Rawlings & The Ed Dunsavage Trio\nSiskiyou Music Project presents “The Sound of a Dry Martini”\, a tribute to the music of Paul Desmond and Jim Hall. The featured performers for this presentation will be alto saxophonist Bob Rawlings and the Ed Dunsavage Trio featuring Joe Cohoon on bass and Chicken Hirsh on drums. \nWhen a reporter asked Paul Desmond once about the sound that he was after he replied\, “The Sound of a Dry Martini” which made perfect sense to me when I read this interview.  Paul Desmond is most well known for his work with Dave Brubeck and his composition Take 5. But after leaving Brubeck he made many more recordings\, mostly with a guitar trio featuring both Jim Hall and Canadian guitarist Ed Bickert. SUMMARY:Amilton Godoy ~ Piano & Léa Freire ~ Flute with Harvey Wainapel ~ Reeds SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Brazilian Rhapsody From Sao Paulo Brazil – SOLD OUT! Email us to get on the cancellation list. The Fall Concert Series will be announced mid August. \nSiskiyou Music Project presents an evening of Brazilian music with pianist Amilton Godoy\, flautist Léa Freire and multi reeds player Harvey Wainapel on Saturday\, August 25 at the Old Siskiyou Barn. \nSão Paulo pianist/composer/arranger AMILTON GODOY founded the iconic Zimbo Trio atage 23. Combining the rhythms of samba and bossa nova with jazz\, this became one of the most influential Brazilian instrumental groups in the second half of the 20th Century\, making 51 recordings and playing in 40 countries over the years. In 1973 he founded the CLAM school of music in São Paulo (Centro Livre de Aprendizagem Musical)\, which has nurtured generations of Brazilian musicians to this day. At age 77\, Godoy is still playing with the energy and enthusiasm of a teenager (a very experienced one)! \nOne of the first students at CLAM was flutist/pianist/composer LÉA FREIRE\, also from São Paulo\, who began her studies there at age 16. Although Amilton was not one of Léa’s teachers there\, the two met when the Zimbo Trio held regular open rehearsals at the school. Over the following years\, Léa has evolved into a major force in creative Brazilian music\, as a performer\, composer\, and producer. In 2011 she invited Amilton to record a solo CD of her compositions\, an invitation he accepted with pleasure. When it came time to release the CD\, Amilton suggested forming a duo\, which went on to record a CD called “A Mil Tons” (2017)\, consisiting of Godoy’s compositions and arrangements. \nThis unique duo has toured throughout Brazil\, Argentina\, and the US\, combining the freedom of popular music and improvisation with the elegance of chamber music\, all performed with that great rhythmical\, lyrical\, and charming Brazilian “accent.” \nIn 2000\, Bay Area saxophonist/clarinetist HARVEY WAINAPEL\, who has toured internationally with Airto Moreira & Flora Purim\, Joe Lovano\, Ray Charles\, and Jovino Santos Neto\, visited Brazil for the first time. He spent two months there researching\, meeting great musicians\, performing and recording\, and has returned every year since then. On his very first night there\, he met Léa Freire\, and a deep friendship developed over the years. Although many informal musical encounters followed\, it was the Duo’s first visit to California in 2017 that resulted in this three-way collaboration\, with Bay Area performances followed by a two week tour of the Pacific Northwest.

SUMMARY:Ken Peplowski & Ehud Asherie ~ SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:The Art of The Duo\, Part 2 ~ SOLD OUT! Please email us to be on the cancellation/wait list. \nSMP welcomes back clarinet/saxophone master Ken Peplowski in performance with New York based pianist Ehud Asherie for an intimate evening of duets at the Old Siskiyou Barn. Ken is no stranger to southern Oregon jazz fans. This will be his fourth SMP appearance and is a regular at the Oregon Coast Jazz Festival. Ken has collaborated with litany of musicians including: Mel Torme\, Leon Redbone\, Charlie Byrd\, Peggy Lee\, George Shearing\, Madonna\, Hank Jones\, Dave Frishberg\, Rosemary Clooney\, Tom Harrell\, James Moody\, Cedar Walton\, Houston Person\, Steve Allen\, Bill Charlap\, Woody Allen\, Marianne Faithfull\, (“Although not necessarily in that order\,” says Ken). \nPianist Ehud Asherie\, “a master of swing and stride” (The New Yorker)\, is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Born in Israel in 1979\, Asherie lived in Italy for six years before his family moved to New York. Though he began playing piano as a child\, his passion for jazz came later—with a Thelonious Monk cassette tape—and his first visit to Smalls Jazz club in Greenwich Village. Largely self-taught\, or rather\, “old-schooled\,” Asherie learned the ropes at Smalls\, spending the wee small hours of his early teens becoming a fixture of the late-night jam sessions. Mentored by the late Frank Hewitt\, Asherie began to develop “his virtuosity and his ear for clean\, crisp lines“ (The Star-Ledger). \nHere’s a short video of Ehud playing in a studio session.

SUMMARY:JOANNA WALLFISCH ~ BEYOND JONI MITCHELL
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project presents London born\, LA / NYC based vocalist\, composer and multi-instrumentalist Joanna Wallfisch for a tribute concert to the great Joni Mitchell at Artistic Piano Gallery in Medford. Joanna has emerged as a unique voice in the singer-songwriter world. With a classical and jazz background her music combines post-folk and art-song with a poetic lyricism which The New York Times described as “sensitive and deep.” She is a master in the art of live vocal looping and creates beguiling vocal soundscapes to accompany her songs. The Telegraph called her virtuosic performance as “sublime and unique.” \nIn the summer of 2016 she created and performed her debut retrospective of 1960’s songstresses\, “Beyond Joni”\, at Music Mountain\, CT\, a program that bridged the sounds and stories of folk and jazz songwriters that have influenced the music culture of today. Calling on the inimitable music of Joni Mitchell\, Joan Baez\, Judee Sill and beyond\, Joanna will intertwine her own original songs and stories into the program as well. \nSince 2011 Joanna has released three critically acclaimed albums\, her fourth\, “Blood and Bone” to be released later in 2017. “Gardens In My Mind”\, (Sunnyside\, 2016)\, features pianist Dan Tepfer and the award-winning Sacconi Quartet\, showcasing Joanna’s “crystalline delivery” (Downbeat) and lush string quartet writing. Downbeat gave this album four stars\, calling it “an exquisite singer-songwriter album\,” while PopMatters called it “a truly beautiful listen from start to finish” \n“An exquisite singer-songwriter album. . .refined and elegant” \n— DownBeat **** \n“Bold\, dramatic and powerful” \n— JazzTimes \n“Beautiful\, intimately confessional and expressive. . . a compelling journey of experimentation and adventure” \n— London Jazz News \n“Ushering you into a magical sound world that references everything from The Third Stream stylings of Chick Corea and Gary Burton’s Lyric Suite for Sextet to the songs of Kurt Weil\, and everything in between\, Gardens In My Mind is an album full of beautifully crafted pieces that all make an indelible impression.” \n— Jazzwise ****

SUMMARY:Quattrosound
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project in collaboration with Britt Education presents Quattrosound in performance at Hilltop Music at the Shops at 24 in Phoenix OR. on Friday\, October 27 at 7 p.m. \nQuattrosound is an innovative acoustic-based ensemble that skillfully blurs the lines of music genre boundaries. The four professionally trained members are equally astute at playing a classical piece by Bach as they are at rocking out to Led Zeppelin\, or picking up Spain by Chick Corea. \nGiovanna Moraga Clayton\, Leah Zeger\, Kay-Ta Matsuno\, and Jorge Villaneuva play violin\, cello\, guitar\, and an eclectic selection of percussion instruments from around the world\, and sing playful vocal arrangements\, creating a sound that soothes the most critical music palette. \nHailing from Japan\, Mexico\, Guatemala\, and the U.S.\, their music selections are as broad as the group’s ethnicities. Individually\, these four accomplished musicians\, now based in Los Angeles\, have played with Bocelli\, Barbra Streisand\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Annie Lennox\, Michael Jackson\, Lalah Hathaway\, Ricky Martin and Gloria Estefan. Together\, they create a unique musical experience with impressive technicality that brings audiences to their feet at every performance. \nQuattrosound raises the bar of originality with fresh compositions and arrangements that “pay homage to the classics” and forge a new contemporary sound. To experience Quattrosound is to take an exciting journey through music.

SUMMARY:Patti Moran McCoy & Ed Dunsavage ~ SOLD OUT! Please email us if you would like to be on a list for a possible 2nd show.
DESCRIPTION:The Art of The Duo – Part 1  \nSiskiyou Music Project kicks off its 16th season with a collaboration featuring pianist Pat Moran McCoy and SMP artistic director Ed Dunsavage on guitar. This will be their first public performance together and will feature a variety of creative and innovative music from Ravels Pavane For a Dead Princess and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez to compositions by Ralph Towner\, Bill Evans\, Duke Ellington\, Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. \nPatti began her career as a concert pianist\, but after hearing Oscar Peterson performing\, decided that jazz was the music she wanted to play. She worked with legendary bassist Scott LaFaro before he began working with pianist Bill Evans. She also performed with Mel Tormé\, Oscar Pettiford\, and the Terry Gibbs Dream Band from 1959 through 1961. One of the highlights of her career was playing at the Hickory House in New York City.”It was pretty amazing to be playing to an audience consisting of many jazz greats like Miles Davis\, Gil Evans\, Erroll Garner\, Cannonball Adderley (he always called me ‘Miss Moran’}—and anyone who was anybody was playing in the city at that time.” \nThis is a very rare opportunity to hear Patti McCoy in such an intimate setting as the Old Siskiyou Barn. Make your reservations early as this show will sell out!

SUMMARY:Howard Alden ~ Sold Out! Reserve Early for the Fall Season!
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nSiskiyou Music Project presents 7 string guitar master Howard Alden for a solo guitar concert at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland. He will be joined by guitarist Ed Dunsavage for several duets during the evening. “He may be the best of his generation\,” writes Owen Cordle in JazzTimes. George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledger proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the New York Post observes that he is “…one of the very finest young guitarists working today.” \nIt seems that the only thing regarding Howard Alden on which the critics have debate is whether the remarkable jazz guitarist is one of the best or simply the best. \nBorn in Newport Beach\, California\, in 1958\, Howard began playing at age ten\, inspired by recordings of Armstrong\, Basie and Goodman\, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel\, Charlie Christian\, Django Reinhardt and George Van Eps. Soon he was working professionally around Los Angeles playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. In 1979\, Alden went east\, for a summer in Atlantic City with Red Norvo\, and continued to perform with him frequently for several years. \nHoward Alden has been a Concord Jazz recording artist since the late ’80s where his prolific recorded output as leader\, co-leader\, and versatile sideman\, has captured an artist of consistently astonishing virtuosity and originality. One of the many highlights in Howard Alden’s fruitful association with Concord Jazz came in 1991 when\, at the urging of Concord President\, Carl Jefferson\, Alden recorded with one of his all-time heroes\, seven-string guitar master George Van Eps on the album Thirteen Strings. \nAs a result of his associating with – and inspiration from – George Van Eps\, Alden has been playing the seven-string guitar since 1992. The seven string guitar imparts a greater range and harmonic richness to Alden’s already colorful tonal palette\, as evidenced on three remarkable follow-up albums with Van Eps\, his critically acclaimed duo recordings with saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski\, and the stunning interplay between Alden and special guest Frank Wess on Your Story – The Music of Bill Evans . Alden also teamed up with fellow guitarists Jimmy Bruno and Frank Vignola to record a three guitar outing entitled The Concord Jazz Guitar Collective \, which was quickly called by some critics “an instant classic!” \nHoward can be heard on the soundtrack to the 1999 Woody Allen movie “Sweet and Lowdown”\, starring Sean Penn\, who was also nominated for an Academy Award for his role as a legendary jazz guitarist in the ’30s. Howard not only played all the guitar solos\, but also coached Mr. Penn on playing the guitar for his role in the film. The London Observer has this to say about Alden’s new solo CD\, My Shining Hour ; “If there is such a thing as a complete jazz guitarist\, then Alden is it. Only a real virtuoso can sustain a whole CD of solo guitar with the aplomb he displays here.” \nIn 2004 Howard was the guitarist(and musical director) chosen for an all-star line-up commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival\, touring 50 cities of the United States in addition to their appearance at the Newport Festival. The 2005-2006 season saw Howard adding his acoustic guitar voice to violinist Mark O’Connor’s Hot Swing on his national concert tour. His 2009 recording\, “I REMEMBER DJANGO”\, once again features his distinctive acoustic sound\, developing and expanding the warm and elegant spirit of his performance in “Sweet and Low Down”. Howard’s inimitable playing has also been sought out by rock/blues/pop icon Steve Miller for recording projects and live appearances. \nHoward Alden was voted “Best Emerging Talent-Guitar” in the first annual JazzTimes critics’ poll\, 1990\, and “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” in the 1996\, 1992\, 1993 and 1995 Downbeat critics’ poll. As jazz critic Wayne Thompson writes simply\, in Jazzscene\, “If there are better young jazz guitar players in America than Howard Alden\, I have yet to hear them.” Howard’s growing base of loyal fans couldn’t agree more.

DESCRIPTION:The Siskiyou Music Project performance of the MJ New Quartet is now SOLD OUT! \nSiskiyou Music Project and Britt Education present Portland based pianist/educator Darrell Grant and the MJ New Quartet for a performance at the Artistic Piano Gallery in Medford. This performance will be a tribute to the music and spirit of the Modern Jazz Quartet. \nFormed by Darrell Grant in 2013\, MJ New is a tribute to the Modern Jazz Quartet’s spirit of classicism\, elegance\, and deeply curated aesthetic rooted in the 1920’s Harlem Renaissance — an aesthetic that for over 40 years resisted the pull of fads\, fashion and cultural upheaval until it sparkled like a diamond. MJ New plays both the MJQ’s classic and lesser known compositions as well as original arrangements and compositions that pay homage to the group’s legendary genre melding. Mesmerizing together\, each of the MJ New members is a virtuoso in their field: \nSince his 1988 appearance in vocalist Betty Carter’s trio\, pianist and composer Darrell Grant has built an international reputation performing with jazz luminaries Frank Morgan\, Tony Williams\, Roy Haynes\, Brian Blade\, and Esperanza Spalding. He has toured as a bandleader and solo artist in the U.S.\, Canada\, Asia\, and Europe. \nBassist Marcus Shelby is an artist in residence with Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and is artistic director of the Marcus Shelby Orchestra. An educator and advocate for sharing the history\, present\, and future of African American lives and social movements in the United States of America\, and a champion of early childhood music education\, he was named one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area” by City Flight Magazine in 2005. \nVibraphonist Mike Horsfall has performed with Chuck Redd\, Leroy Vinegar\, Rebecca Kilgore\, and Gary Hobbs\, and has recorded with Pink Martini\, the Nu Shooz Orchestra and with Tall Jazz\, a trio he co-founded in 1989 which was voted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s 2010 Hall of Fame. He serves on the music faculty at Willamette University and Mt. Hood Community College. \nCarlton Jackson\, whose drumming was called “intensely musical” by the Los Angeles Times\, is a member of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. His well documented work with pianists Tom Grant and Dan Siegel\, guitarists Dan Balmer and Terry Rob\, bassist Leroy Vinnegar\, blues singer Curtis Salgado\, and others\, have solidified his status as an engaging\, versatile performer.

SUMMARY:Holly Hofmann & Mike Wofford The Art of the Duo
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes back jazz flautist Holly Hofmann and Mike Wofford for an intimate performance at the Old Siskiyou Barn. \nAcknowledged as an artist with one of the most exquisite flute tones in jazz\, Hofmann and her husband\, Mike Wofford will present an evening of intimate duets\, covering a range of jazz styles. Harvey Siders wrote in JazzTimes Magazine\, “Hofmann and Wofford provide melody\, harmony\, rhythm and improvisation so completely that any listener would never bemoan the lack of bass and drums.” From Brazilian to bebop and blues\, Holly and Mike take a joyful approach to jazz and their musical empathy draws in the audience. \nStraight-ahead jazz is alive and well in the capable hands of flutist Holly Hofmann and her musical partners … Together they soar cohesively over familiar terrain\, reminding us what jazz should do for you.\n— Jim Santella\, LA Jazz Scene \nTime was when women who could play had a hard time getting recognition in the jazz world. Nowadays that has turned around to the extent that it seems that many women in jazz are not being judged by the same standards that should be applied to everyone regardless of gender. What I’m saying is that in this day of a free pass for some women [Hofmann] has paid her dues in full.\n— Ira Gitler\, Jazz.com

SUMMARY:New West Guitar Group
DESCRIPTION:SMP welcomes back The New West Guitar Group. NWGG has developed a wide spread reputation as one of the premier guitar ensembles in the world. Featuring guitarists Perry Smith\, John Storie and Will Brahm\, they perform recognizable covers\, jazz standards and exciting originals. Their signature sound comes from an innovative style that highlights rhythm\, beauty and virtuosity through combining acoustic and electric guitars. \nPraised as “sharp and refined” by the Seattle Times\, the New West Guitar Group has released five instrumental albums over the last 10 years. Each project features their unique style of laid-back virtuosity through expert arrangements crafted by the members of the group. Their music is regularly featured on NPR and jazz radio stations\, while their repertoire is performed throughout the country by college and high school guitar programs. Graduates of USC’s Thornton School of Music\, the New West Guitar Group’s versatility as players and composers have given them a reputation as pioneers in the realm of guitar ensemble. \nBeautiful acoustic rhythms\, vibrant classically infused single note lines and jazzy arpeggios cover the magnificent  musical landscape these three players create. — Metronome Magazine \nA rare chemistry…shimmering arpeggios\, collectively strummed chords\, tight cracking interplay and complementary playing. —  Downbeat Magazine \nThey’re masters of their caressing\, cascading sound\, best categorized as chamber jazz…dexterously peppered\, now and again\, with Gypsy fire\, flamenco zest and steel-string twang.  —  JazzTimes \nThe group’s creativity in not being afraid to stretch boundaries is helping to forge a new area of music that should inspire other guitarists… — Vintage Guitar Magazine
