SUMMARY:Bruce Forman
DESCRIPTION:The Red Guitar\nSOLD OUT!     \nEmail us to be on the cancellation list.  mail@siskiyoumusicproject.com \nSiskiyou Music Project kicks off its Summer/Fall concert series with a performance by guitarist Bruce Forman at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland. \nImagine receiving an invitation to a gala featuring John Coltrane\, Sigmund Freud\, and Faust. Bruce Forman’s “The Red Guitar” is all that and more. It draws on Forman’s decades of experience as a formidable jazz guitarist and his considerable skill as a storyteller and teacher\, producing a work that is greater than the sum of its dazzling parts. \nA story in and about jazz\, The Red Guitar showcases Bruce Forman’s genre—breaking inventiveness and his ability to improvise and create within a classical form. Enlisting the full power of the jazz idiom and integrating it with seasoned and provocative story-telling\, he confronts the dilemma of artistic obsession face-to-face—by creating a work of art that simultaneously explores and demonstrates the hold that music has over its most ardent followers\, the hold that poses itself as a life-or-death\, must-be-solved-question to Forman and his ilk: “The Red Guitar. Do you play it…or does it play you? \nDeep immersion in American culture inspires Forman to contribute to the traditions that he draws from. Reunion! (the newest project) revisits the famed Poll Winners sessions with cohorts John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton\, playing instruments owned by Barney Kessel\, Ray Brown and Shelly Manne; Formanism (his trio project); original works like The Red Guitar; his high-rated podcast\, GuitarWank; Cow Bop and the “road challenges” down historic byways like Route 66; JazzMasters Workshop; Junkyard Duo; GrumpsTV (a fifty episode YouTube variety show during the lockdown)\, the popular ‘first chorus of the day’ series on Instagram…these are only the latest answers to the endless question that underlies Bruce Forman’s creativity. His music and life reflect every step of his journey\, and demonstrate the awareness of an artist who’s very much at home in the world\, and at the top of his form. \nFor more information please visit Bruces website at https://www.bruceforman.com/the-red-guitar

SUMMARY:Roni Ben-Hur Trio
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Sylvia Cuenca and Essiet Essiet\nSiskiyou Music Project welcomes for his first southern Oregon performance\, guitarist Roni Ben-Hur with drummer Sylvia Cuenca and bassist Essiet Essiet on Sunday\, September 22 at 4 p.m. at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland. \nJazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator\, renowned for his golden tone\, improvisational brilliance\, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers\, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist\, Ben-Hur keeps the flame alive and pure\, burning in every note… He’s a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Roni – born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen\, based in the New York City area – has recorded a dozen-plus albums as leader or co-leader\, with The New York Times praising his “crisp\, fluid style” and Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” He has developed a rare facility in both straight-ahead jazz and samba/bossa-nova styles\, underscored by his work with masters in each field\, from bebop piano sage Barry Harris to beloved Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade. \nRoni’s newest album as a leader is Stories\, released by Dot Time Records in March 2021; its poetic mix of songs and instrumentals sees the guitarist drawing a line from childhood musical memories in Israel to his life today as a globally minded artist. JazzTimes\, in its glowing review of Stories\, noted the guitarist’s inspired interplay with such diverse talents as pianist George Cables and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen\, as well as vocalists from Israel and Mexico; the review went on to laud Roni and company’s brand of storytelling as “distinctive” and “uniformly engaging.” Always an educator as well as a performer\, Roni has directed the jazz program at New York’s Kaufman Music Center for more than 25 years. Along with creating acclaimed educational products – such as the method book Talk Jazz: Guitar – Roni has also directed international music camps for two decades\, currently leading his Roni Ben-Hur Jazz Camp in Vermont and France. Jazz guitar star Russell Malone got it right when he said: “Everything Roni does is beautiful. He has the magic touch.” \nIf you’d like to hear Roni\, please click here https://www.youtube.com/@RoniBenHurJazz \nSylvia Cuenca is an active drummer on the New York and SF Bay Area jazz scenes who is contributing outstanding performances in a variety of situations. She has had the honor of sharing the bandstand with saxophone legend Joe Henderson for 4 years and trumpet legend Clark Terry for 17 years. The Joe Henderson quartet toured frequently in European countries Norway\, Denmark\, Sweden\, Austria\, Belgium\, England\, Switzerland\, France\, Italy and Germany and venues across the U.S. In a trio setting she performed with Joe Henderson and Charlie Haden in 1989 and with George Mraz in 1994. She performed with the Clark Terry Quintet and Big Band at Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Blue Note\, Queen Elizabeth 2\, Royal Viking\, S.S. Norway jazz cruises and clubs\, concerts and festivals in the U.S\, Europe\, the Caribbean and South America. While working with the Clark Terry quintet she had the opportunity to perform with guest artists Al Grey\, Red Holloway\, Jimmy Heath\, Frank Wess\, Marian McPartland\, Dianne Reeves\, Joe Williams and Lou Donaldson to name a few. To learn more about Sylvia visit her website here. \nEssiet Okon Essiet first received critical acclaim more than a decade ago as a member of saxophonist Bobby Watson’s post hard bop group Horizon He has long since established himself as one of New York’s premier bassist. Born in Omaha\, Nebraska\, his parents having moved there from Nigeria\, West Africa\, the family later moved to Wisconsin where Essiet began his musical studies at age 10 on the violin. Four years\, later he switched to the bass. As a child\, and into his teens\, his family moved often. His father worked for the US\, as well as the Nigerian government\, and his job took the family to many places including Europe\, Africa and various cities in the US. His family finally settled in Portland\, Oregon where he began studying jazz at the age of 14. Having traveled widely as a youngster with his family\, he had an easy time adjusting to life on the road once he turned professional. More importantly\, his early exposure to many cultures\, languages\, folkways and religions\, fostered his world view of strength through diversity. “Some musicians are purist” says Essiet\, “but I like to mix styles. I like many different types of cultures.” To learn more about Essiet visit his website here.

Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following\, releasing twelve CDs and touring extensively throughout the United States\, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.” \nFor a decade Dmitri and Holly have toured the western states\, delighting audiences with their creative collaborations. SUMMARY:Derek Gripper/South African Guitarist
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes for his first Southern Oregon appearance\, guitarist Derek Gripper. Derek will be on a solo tour of the west coast all the way from South Africa. This will be a very special evening of music you won’t want to miss. \nDerek Gripper is one of South Africa’s leading guitarists whose love of the kora set him transcribing and recording some of its greatest works\, changing the face of classical guitar… \nWhen Gripper released “One Night on Earth\,” his first album of kora translations\, classical guitar legend John Williams said he thought it was “absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it\,” while kora maestro Toumani Diabaté asked for confirmation that it was indeed just one person playing. Both invited Derek to collaborate with them: Derek performed with Williams in London’s Shakespeare’s Globe and King’s Place\, and with Diabaté and his Symmetric Orchestra at the Acoustik Festival Bamako\, Mali. His 2016 Carnegie Hall debut paired him with Mali’s Trio da Kali\, and the UK’s Songlines honoured him with best album in Africa and the Middle East for his 2016 album “Libraries on Fire.” \nSince these two recordings put kora/guitar translations on the map\, his recent recordings “A Year of Swimming” (2020)\, “Billy Goes to Durban\,” (2021) and “Sleep Songs for My Daughter” (2022)\, have incorporated elements of his kora explorations in original compositions and improvisations\, captured on tape in the field and in studio\, while his Bach recordings have shown that African music has a lot to teach us about recapturing the natural simplicity of early European music. \nTo learn more about Derek Gripper please visit his website here. https://www.derekgripper.com \n“Five stars… Gripper has brilliantly transferred [the kora] repertoire onto a regular six string guitar. He sees [Toumani] Diabaté as the Segovia\, or indeed John Williams\, of the kora\, championing it as a solo instrument. And Gripper brilliantly takes it back to the guitar. He’s opening a whole new repertoire of classical guitar music… bringing African guitar into the classical mainstream.” \n— SIMON BROUGHTON

SUMMARY:The Berkeley Choro Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes The Berkeley Choro Ensemble (pronounced “shoro”) for their first Ashland performance.  The Berkeley Choro Ensemble is a  group of world-class musicians from the SF Bay Area that made its debut in January\, 2010\, at the Berkeley Public Library. The group celebrates the music\, culture and history of Brazil\, with a special emphasis on the Choro genre\, a style of music which emerged in the 1800’s in Brazil\, fusing the music of Brazil’s European immigrants and the native music of Brazil’s indigenous and African-Brazilian population. In particular\, the choro sound is somewhat akin to a combination of European classical music\, ragtime\, and blues. Historically\, the choro style influenced Brazil’s most famous classical composer\, Heitor Villa Lobos\, to compose some of the world’s most hauntingly beautiful music\, the Bachianas Brasileiras. Our repertoire also includes samba\, bossa nova\, jazz\, and the music of Northeast Brazil. \nThe group features Harvey Wainaple\, Jane Lenoir\, Brian Rice and RICARDO PEIXOTO. DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes Bay Area vocalist Stella Heath and her group for her first southern Oregon performance. She’ll be presenting “From Billie Holiday to Edith Piaf which blends a jazz manouche sound with Billie/Edith material as well as more contemporary material. \nSinging since the age of eight\, Stella feels wholly blessed to be able to express herself through music and song\, and to carry forth the torch of Jazz Music that she loves so dearly. She grew up in the North San Francisco Bay Area\, steeped in her mother’s eclectic music collection; some of her early musical influences were Louis Armstrong\, Edith Piaf\, Buena Vista Social Club\, Billie Holiday\, Tom Waits\, Bod Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald. Her education was primarily in Acting at Interlochen Arts Academy and Syracuse University\, where she received a degree in classical acting and cultural geography. She spent many years as a Shakespearian actress based out of New York City\, where she began to sing Jazz again with the incredible Marjorie Eliot in Harlem. She moved to her home state of California in 2014\, and began playing music full time\, starting the eclectic gypsy jazz inspired band\, Bandjango Collectif\, a wild around the edges band that mixes French Jazz Manouche\, New Orleans Hot Swing\, and Eclectic Global Folk\, allowing Stella to explore and play in vocal improvisation\, different languages\, and song interpretation. In 2019 she debuted The Billie Holiday Project\, a historically centered musical tribute to the great Lady Day; The show was met with great success and quickly moved into some of the Bay Area’s most reputable listening venues and began touring nationally. The pandemic brought fruitful new musical connections and collaborations with musicians such as Marcus Shelby\, Gunhild Carling\, and Ben Levin in Cincinnati. \nIn October 2023\, Stella released an EP with Ben Levin\, “Waiting Just for You” on the Vizztone Label. She will release a much anticipated Billie Holiday Tribute Album as well as a Holiday Album in 2025. In Addition to The Billie Holiday Project\, Stella has blended history and music in programs such as “Stella Meets Nat: celebrating the work of Early Nat King Cole and the King Cole Trio\,” “From Billie Holiday to Edith Piaf\,” “Unsung Standards: Lesser known gems from the Great American Songbook” and ” Stella Swings Ella”. Stella has a passion for uncovering gems from the library and music archives. She has a deep love for Jazz and its history\, and believes it should be an integral part of American childhood curriculum. Stella took on the role of Education Coordinator for Healdsburg Jazz in 2023\, and works to bring Jazz and cultural music into the Public School System and Community in Sonoma County. She is also a new mother of twins!
