Tim and Myles Thompson have been inspiring audiences throughout the country. With recent performances that include the Montreal Jazz Festival\, Walnut Valley Festival\, and the Chet Atkins Festival\, they have polished their craft to a fine luster. The duo has opened for Spyro Gyra\, Don Williams\, Mountain Heart\, and Richard Elliot. \nTim is a Nashville based session player\, singer/songwriter and the 2008 International Fingerstyle Champion. Music has always filled the Thompson home; unknowingly it inspired Myles to pick up the violin at the tender age of five! By the age of twelve he was studying music theory and improvising with skill beyond his years – it was clear that music would be his life. Today at the ripe old age of nineteen Myles is also a prolific singer/songwriter and mandolin player. If you ask his dad or an audience member\, they will tell you that Myles fancies himself as quite the comedian\, most often at his dad’s expense.

Kathleen Grace has traveled the world sharing her pure sound and authentic storytelling with audiences from New York to South America. DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes back one of our favorite musicians\, Dmitri Matheny for a performance on Sunday\, October 30 at Paschal Winery. Dmitri was the first jazz artist to play at the Old Siskiyou Barn with pianist Darrell Grant and it’s always a great pleasure to have him back. This time\, it is for the release of his latest CD\, Jazz Noir. the performance will feature saxophonist Charles McNeal along with guitarist Ed Dunsavage\, bassist Joe Cohoon and drummer Chicken Hirsh. \nYou can read the liner notes from the new CD below. \nAsk people to name a musical instrument synonymous with film noir\, and it’s a safe bet no one will say the flugelhorn\, the ax of choice for my man\, Dmitri Matheny. It’d be the saxophone\, by a landslide. Which is strange\, because sax barely figures in scores from the classic era of film noir\, roughly 1944-54. Orchestral strings set the tone\, in the work of such geniuses as Miklós Rózsa (Double Indemnity)\, Franz Waxman (Night and the City)\, and Roy Webb (Out of the Past). \nPeople hearing that saxophone aren’t wrong\, however. It’s an understandable misconception\, based on how the elastic notion of noir was integrated and adapted into the cultural bloodstream by crime writers\, film and television producers\, and jazz musicians. It’s a dark and twisted road that’s led us from The Killers (Rózsa\, 1946) to Odds Against Tomorrow (John Lewis\, 1959) to Taxi Driver (Bernard Herrmann\, 1976) to Mulholland Drive (Angelo Badalamenti\, 2001). In the roadhouses along the way\, combos and arrangements have constantly changed—but the song has remained the same: you suffer for your desire … so you may as well suffer with style. \nCharles McNeal \nDmitri Matheny and I charted this route years ago when we collaborated on a “Jazz-Noir” film series for SFJAZZ\, which drew on our respective knowledge of music and film. I came away from the experience with a keener insight and deeper appreciation of the scoring of many favorite films. If our conspiracy struck the spark for this album\, I’m proud of the small role I played and thrilled that you get to reap the benefit. I’m just tickled to be name-checked (between Herb Caen and Tony Bennett!) in the album’s centerpiece\, “Crime Scenes\,” a 12-minute suite that delves into the sexy and sinister side of San Francisco\, featuring some amusingly “hard-boiled” spoken-word poetry\, including a dame who will “draw a chalk outline around your heart.” It pays loving\, backhanded tribute to my hometown\, and local sleuths ranging from Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon) to Mike Stone (The Streets of San Francisco). \nThat’s what I love about Dmitri’s take on noir—it travels the whole route\, reaching back to caress the sinuous notes of the venerable “Caravan\,” a Juan Tizol composition from 1936 made famous by the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, then tracing that sultry promise forward to find Audrey Horne slinking around in shrouded rooms to Badalamenti’s score for Twin Peaks. In these grooves (can’t help it\, grew up in a vinyl world)\, Matheny leads his crack crew through a sonic history of noir\, with nods to composers ranging from Harold Arlen to Lalo Schifrin. \nThe opening “Noir Medley” weaves together unforgettable swatches of scores by Henry Mancini (Touch of Evil)\, Jerry Goldsmith (Chinatown)\, David Raksin (Laura)\, Bernard Herrmann (Vertigo\, Taxi Driver) and Harold Arlen (Blues in the Night)\, and instantly proves that\, yes\, the flugelhorn can evoke— perfectly—the nocturnal longing of the best noir. \nMatheny crafts an eight-minute Gold Medal paperback out of poet Dana Gioia’s “Film Noir\,” a pungent roux of small-town trouble straight out of Black Wings Has My Angel\, featuring a discontented dame who\, “if she shot you dead would finish your drink.” \nThe extra kick in this road trip is the juxtaposition of venerable jazz standards (“Stormy Weather\,” “Estate”) with unexpected\, underappreciated gems such as John Williams’ gorgeous “The Long Goodbye\,” composed for Robert Altman’s 1973 revisionist take on Philip Marlowe\, and Stevie Wonder’s “Golden Lady\,” from the same year. (If you don’t think “Golden Lady” is noir\, revisit the lyrics: the poor sap is dying to sell his soul for his dream girl.) \nOther surprises: a haunting version of Polish composer Bronislaw Kaper’s High Wall\, the title theme for the 1947 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer noir of the same name\, and the band’s jaunty exit with “What Now My Love?” French composer Gilbert Bécaud’s renowned 1961 hit\, covered by everyone from Shirley Bassey to Sonny and Cher\, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass to Elvis Presley. \nEspecially poignant for me is Matheny’s cover of Charlie Haden and Quartet West’s 1995 “Here’s Looking at You\,” itself a tribute to the classic noir films that inspired Quartet West’s rich\, romantic sound. It’s a beautiful\, elegiac nod to a recently fallen comrade. \nLike Haden\, Dmitri Matheny is an artist who manages to find beauty blooming in the darkest corners. He’s a good man to have along if you’re planning a long drive through an uncertain night.

SUMMARY:Ken Peplowski with the Ed Dunsavage Trio
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes back clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski to southern Oregon. Ken will be joined by the Ed Dunsavage Trio featuring Joe Cohoon on bass & Chicken Hirsh on drums and will be performing some of the music from his latest recording\, Enrapture. \nKen Peplowski has recorded approximately 50 CDs as a soloist\, and close to 400 as a sideman\, some of the artists he’s performed/recorded with include Charlie Byrd\, Mel Torme\, Rosemary Clooney\, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops\, Hank Jones\, Peggy Lee\, Bill Charlap\, Woody Allen\, Benny Goodman\, and Madonna. He travels at least half of every year\, playing clubs\, concert halls\, colleges\, and pops concerts. He has headlined the Hollywood Bowl\, Carnegie Hall\, the Blue Note\, and Dizzy’s Club amongst many other venues. Ken’s CDs on the Capri label\, “Noir Blue”\, “In Search Of”\, and “Maybe September” were released to great critical acclaim and massive airplay. He has recorded music as diverse as Italian and French folk songs\, avant-garde jazz\, pop\, and classical music; he recorded the Darius Milhaud Clarinet Concerto with an orchestra in Sofia\, Bulgaria\, and was a featured soloist (playing Mozart) in 2015 at the Siletz Bay Music Festival in Oregon\, where he will be premiering a new concerto in 2016\, written for him by Dick Hyman. Ken was the musical director of the Oregon Festival Of American Music (OFAM) for eight years\, and is a longtime performer/consultant to The Jazz Cruise\, where he was elected into the Jazz Cruise Hall Of Fame in 2013. He resides in New York City with his wife\, dog\, and whatever children happen to be passing through.

Fans of great Gypsy Jazz won’t want to miss this one! \nRhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome\, named for a Django Reinhardt tune\, offers up a newly minted sound\, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France\, yet wholly contemporary. \nLed by violinist Jason Anick and guitarist Olli Soikkeli\, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke on second guitar and Greg Loughman on bass\, Rhythm Future is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre. \nWhere the band’s self-titled debut album re-visited classic jazz and Gypsy jazz favorites\, Travels\, the quartet’s current release\, concentrates on group originals that make captivating use of musical sources from outside the conventional Gypsy jazz terrain. Travels reflects both the accumulated knowledge garnered from the groups world-wide touring as well as the international influences that inspired new rhythmic and harmonic possibilities within their compositions and arrangements. \nJason Anick\, an award-winning composer and one of the youngest professors at the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston\, has shared the stage with an array of artists including Grammy award winning guitarist John Jorgenson\, Stevie Wonder\, and Tommy Emmanuel. \nOlli Soikkeli (coined “the Finnish boy wonder”) recently made the move from Scandinavia to New York City\, where he quickly became a top call guitarist in the bustling Brooklyn jazz scene. He has performed alongside rising star Cyrille Aimee\, world-renowned Gypsy guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg\, Bucky Pizzarelli and many others. \nMax O’Rourke was the winner of the 2015 Saga Award from DjangoFest Northwest\, and at 19 has already toured/recorded with many of the top American Gypsy Jazz musicians including John Jorgenson and Gonzalo Bergara. \nGreg Loughman is a top call bassist in Boston and has been heard with such luminaries as Sheila Jordan\, Curtis Fuller and George Garzone.
