SUMMARY:Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniola Cancelled/Postponed - Conversations In Jazz w/Ed Dunsavage Trio
DESCRIPTION:We are very sad to announce that the Frank and Vinnie show has been cancelled.  Frank was in a terrible ATV accident where he was thrown into a tree and sustained many injuries.  Thankfully he was wearing a helmet.  He was airlifted to the hospital and is doing well but it will be sometime before he is able to tour again.  We wish Frank a speedy and full recovery and look forward to his return to the concert stages across the world where so many of his fans have grown to know and love him and his wonderful music.  For any of our patrons that have already paid for reservations we are happy to give you a credit or transfer your purchase to another show or you might consider a donation to the SMP Artists-In -Schools Program. \nSince we have Paschal Winery reserved we are going to have a jazz party that we’re calling “Conversations In Jazz” with Ed Dunsavage\, Joe Cohoon and Chicken Hirsh. We’re looking forward to some audience participation and we’ll be raising funds for the SMP Artists-In-Schools program. See you there! \nThere are still a few seats available for the Pearl Django CD Release Concert on June 2 and Ken Peplowski with the Ed Dunsavage Trio on June 16. \nThanks for understanding.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! MJ New Quartet A Tribute to the Modern Jazz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Siskiyou Music Project performance of the MJ New Quartet is now SOLD OUT! \nSiskiyou Music Project and Britt Education present Portland based pianist/educator Darrell Grant and the MJ New Quartet for a performance at the Artistic Piano Gallery in Medford. This performance will be a tribute to the music and spirit of the Modern Jazz Quartet. \nFormed by Darrell Grant in 2013\, MJ New is a tribute to the Modern Jazz Quartet’s spirit of classicism\, elegance\, and deeply curated aesthetic rooted in the 1920’s Harlem Renaissance — an aesthetic that for over 40 years resisted the pull of fads\, fashion and cultural upheaval until it sparkled like a diamond. MJ New plays both the MJQ’s classic and lesser known compositions as well as original arrangements and compositions that pay homage to the group’s legendary genre melding. Mesmerizing together\, each of the MJ New members is a virtuoso in their field: \nSince his 1988 appearance in vocalist Betty Carter’s trio\, pianist and composer Darrell Grant has built an international reputation performing with jazz luminaries Frank Morgan\, Tony Williams\, Roy Haynes\, Brian Blade\, and Esperanza Spalding. He has toured as a bandleader and solo artist in the U.S.\, Canada\, Asia\, and Europe. \nBassist Marcus Shelby is an artist in residence with Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and is artistic director of the Marcus Shelby Orchestra. An educator and advocate for sharing the history\, present\, and future of African American lives and social movements in the United States of America\, and a champion of early childhood music education\, he was named one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area” by City Flight Magazine in 2005. \nVibraphonist Mike Horsfall has performed with Chuck Redd\, Leroy Vinegar\, Rebecca Kilgore\, and Gary Hobbs\, and has recorded with Pink Martini\, the Nu Shooz Orchestra and with Tall Jazz\, a trio he co-founded in 1989 which was voted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s 2010 Hall of Fame. He serves on the music faculty at Willamette University and Mt. Hood Community College. \nCarlton Jackson\, whose drumming was called “intensely musical” by the Los Angeles Times\, is a member of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. His well documented work with pianists Tom Grant and Dan Siegel\, guitarists Dan Balmer and Terry Rob\, bassist Leroy Vinnegar\, blues singer Curtis Salgado\, and others\, have solidified his status as an engaging\, versatile performer.

SUMMARY:Holly Hofmann & Mike Wofford The Art of the Duo
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes back jazz flautist Holly Hofmann and Mike Wofford for an intimate performance at the Old Siskiyou Barn. \nAcknowledged as an artist with one of the most exquisite flute tones in jazz\, Hofmann and her husband\, Mike Wofford will present an evening of intimate duets\, covering a range of jazz styles. Harvey Siders wrote in JazzTimes Magazine\, “Hofmann and Wofford provide melody\, harmony\, rhythm and improvisation so completely that any listener would never bemoan the lack of bass and drums.” From Brazilian to bebop and blues\, Holly and Mike take a joyful approach to jazz and their musical empathy draws in the audience. \nStraight-ahead jazz is alive and well in the capable hands of flutist Holly Hofmann and her musical partners … Together they soar cohesively over familiar terrain\, reminding us what jazz should do for you.\n— Jim Santella\, LA Jazz Scene \nTime was when women who could play had a hard time getting recognition in the jazz world. Nowadays that has turned around to the extent that it seems that many women in jazz are not being judged by the same standards that should be applied to everyone regardless of gender. What I’m saying is that in this day of a free pass for some women [Hofmann] has paid her dues in full.\n— Ira Gitler\, Jazz.com

SUMMARY:Adrian Legg ~ Finger-style Solo Guitarist from Great Britain
DESCRIPTION:SMP welcomes guitarist Adrian Legg to southern Oregon. This performance will take place at Hill Top Music\, located in the Shops at 24 in Phoenix Oregon. \nSince the 1990 release of his first U.S. recording Guitars and Other Cathedrals\, Adrian Legg has more than lived up to the expectations stirred by an ongoing avalanche of praise from critics\, fans\, top guitar mags and peers alike. Joe Satriani once said\, “He’s simply the best acoustic guitar player I’ve ever heard…he plays like he has hammers for fingers.” The genius that the Boston Globe has called “technical brilliance paired with a troubadour’s tale-weaving skill” led him from 1993-96 to be voted Best Fingerstyle Guitarist four years straight by the readers of Guitar Player magazine. On Inheritance\, his second release for Favored Nations and ninth overall\, Legg blends his extraordinary virtuosity on the acoustic with a lush sonic arena that harkens back to the musical textures of his childhood life before the guitar. \nDescribed by Audio magazine as a “kind of cross between Robert Fripp and Garrison Keillor\,” British guitarist Adrian Legg is a genuine entertainer who excels at not only painting pictures if not frescoes and telling stories with music but also wittily regaling his audiences with tales from his life and travels and his cogent and often oblique yet thought provoking observations on a spectrum of topics. It’s all part of his dedication to making his performances a full-blooded emotional experience. “If you haven’t shared a laugh with someone\,” he insists\, “you certainly can’t share a tragedy.”
